The Other Side of Life is the new single from London-based artist and musician Seb Patane, aka Fog School; it features guest vocals by up and coming South London rap artist Justice Laurrell.
The title and Laurrell’s words are borrowed from a small section of 80s band Japan’s song of the same title. Patane had recorded an acapella version of the track years before; chopped and pasted those recordings punctuate the song, interspersed with what sound like further vocal improvisations and eventually Laurrell’s sharp spoken delivery.
Patane saw in the lyrics of the original song a simple yet poignant metaphor for life post the first pandemic year; indeed the track aims to suggest contemporary communal doubts and hesitations, as well as the wish for an existence beyond shared trauma and a desire to move forward.
Stylistically, Fog School continues its study into off kilter rhythms, angular pitch shifted vocals and a keen ear for danceable beats supported by slabs of dark bass.
The single pushes aspects of melody to the fore, and with the involvement of Laurrell, opens up a potential new collaborative phase. The track is finally produced by longtime collaborator Giancarlo Trimarchi aka The Diish.
The Other Side of Life, although dabbling with light melancholia, hopes to offer a lifting sonic antidote for troubled times and to provide the inspiration for warm yet dusky summer evening dances.
